Today is a day to honor all of those who have served our country or are currently serving it. We appreciate all that you do. On this day, we also remember all of the loved ones we have lost this year and throughout the years. I'm sad that Jack won't know his grandma and great grandma and that Mara won't know them better, but they will know they were loved very much.

Happy birthday to me
Not only was this my first week back at work and Jack's first week of school, but it was also my birthday week. :)
Monday, May 24
See Monday's post here.
Tuesday, May 25
We got Mara and Jack a play set for our backyard, and John spent the day separating and labeling all of the pieces. I'm looking forward to the kids being able to play on it.
Wednesday, May 26
I picked up some Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers for my lunch this week, and they are surprisingly good. I've never been big on frozen meals, but these aren't frozen. Instead, you actually add water and cook the rice/pasta/stuffing and add the sauce and meat topping. I look forward to trying more of these.
Thursday, May 27
For some reason, it always seems to rain either on my birthday or on the day we celebrate my birthday. It has been that way for all but a handful of my 34 birthdays. I thought that this year might be the exception, especially since there wasn't any rain in the forecast. However, we were surprised when brief showers popped up this afternoon, making it yet another birthday that it rained. It didn't rain too much, and I enjoyed having dinner with my family.
Friday, May 28
Mara got to go swimming for the first time this year that wasn't for swimming lessons. She had a lot of fun playing in the pool and practicing the swimming that she's learned the past few months.
Saturday, May 29
Mara had what I think was her last birthday party at her current school today. Lani was able to come and play too since it was at a public splash park and she stayed the night with us Friday night. Jack napped while the girls played. That night, we celebrated my birthday with my family.
Sunday, May 30
We bought a Jumperoo for Jack when I was still pregnant, and I finally got it out for him today. He wasn't too sure about it, but I think he's going to really like it when he can actually jump in it.

Jack's First Day of School
Also known as my first day back to work after 11 weeks of maternity leave. :(
The day wasn't nearly as difficult as the first time I had to leave Mara at a daycare. Maybe it's because I've already been through it once, or maybe it's because I was so busy talking to people and the day just flew by. Don't get me wrong because I did miss my little guy, but I also know that he'll do well at his school. He seemed pretty happy with Ms. Lora when I left him to take Mara to school.

Last week of staying home
Monday, May 17
John's grandpa loved to work with wood and made a lot of things for John's grandma. Since she died, a lot of the items he made is being passed out to family members. John's parents brought us the microwave cart that he built because they didn't have a space for it in their newly redone kitchen. Now, we need to take out a small cabinet in our kitchen so we can put it beside the refrigerator.
Tuesday, May 18

Mara earned a trip to go bowling as one of her prizes for listening and not whining or crying. Since we went after school hours, we invited Lori, Mikey, and Lani to come along. As an added bonus, they got to bowl for free (we just paid for shoes) thanks to kidsbowlfree.com.
Wednesday, May 19
When I picked Mara up from school today, the door accidentally went over her toe and cut it, and we bandaged it up when we got home. It was a little overkill, but it was hard to put something at the top of her toe.
Thursday, May 20
We finally got some patio furniture for our backyard. No more eating off our laps when we want to eat outside. (There's a fourth chair, but John didn't get it put together before we ate since we didn't need it.)
Friday, May 21
We went to Home Depot tonight, and Mara and Lani enjoyed holding Jack in the race car shopping cart.
Saturday, May 22
Mara had her last ballet class today. We were able to sit in on the class, but we forgot to bring the Nikon (along with her ballet shoes). She still had fun, though, and we were able to get a few pictures from the class, including one with her teacher, Ms. Amanda.
Sunday, May 23
We met up with Sherri and Melissa for dinner tonight, and it was the first time they got to meet Jack. We met at Cafe Rosa's, which has pretty good food.

Going back to work
Jack's going to start going to daycare when I go back to work Monday, but I'm not ready to leave him yet. I think I'm ready to go back to work; however, I don't like the idea of being away from Jack for 9 hours or more each day. I know it will be good for him. Mara survived, and I think she's more than ready for kindergarten next year because of her daycare.
And not only is Jack starting school, but he's also going to be going to a different one from Mara. That means that we'll have kids in two daycares for almost three months, but at least we won't have to worry about school zones after the first two weeks since school will be out for the summer. We also won't have to move Jack closer to our house when Mara starts school since his school is only a couple of miles away from us (whereas Mara's is about 8 miles away).
Too bad I can't take Jack to work with me and forgo daycare completely, but I don't think that would work out very well. I'd pay more attention to him than my work. :)

Jack's Birth Announcement
Jack's 10 weeks old now, and I finally got his birth announcements in the mail to family today. They've actually been done for a while, but it took me awhile to get them sent out for no reason other than I didn't do it. So, without further ado, here are Jack's birth announcements. :)
And just because I didn't have this blog around when Mara was born, here's hers.

A new toy for me
Monday, May 10
See Monday's post here.
Tuesday, May 11
I've been wanting a Nikon D90 for a couple of years now, and we finally got one today. Not only is it a DSLR, but it also takes movies too. We got an external flash as well, so pictures with flashes look more natural. It's my birthday/anniversary/Christmas/Mother's Day gift for many years to come, but I couldn't be happier. :)
Wednesday, May 12
When Mara was little, she loved wearing bucket hats, so we got Jack his first one today. He's not too sure of it yet, but he didn't mind smiling for the camera.
Thursday, May 13
After Mara was born, John order a block for me with her birth information on it for my first Mother's Day. This year, he ordered one with Jack's information, and we got it in the mail today.
Friday, May 14
Today was Western Day at Mara's school, so we were able to reuse the outfit she wore to the hoedown a couple of weeks ago. The only thing she was missing was a pair of boots, but those are hard to find this time of year. We foresee a few more western days in her future since he school mascot will be the Texans when she starts Kindergarten.
Saturday, May 15
Doxy didn't want to give up her spot even though Mara was there just a minute before, so she didn't mind Mara putting her legs on her. Mara is also eager to help out with Jack and wanted to change his diaper today. Since it was a dirty one, I cleaned Jack off but let Mara put his diaper on him.
Sunday, May 16
Mara played in the water with her cousins this afternoon. She has a lot of fun playing with them and getting wet. She can hardly wait until it's warm enough to get into a pool.

Time and a new baby help heal wounds
It wasn't until this past weekend that I realized that I missed the two year anniversary of my first miscarriage on May 1. It stunned me when I realized it because I even talked about it at the birthday party Mara went to on Saturday, and it still didn't hit me until later that day. I kind of thought it would take longer for the pain and the ache of that miscarriage, but I guess having Jack in our lives has made a huge difference.

Jack's 2-month Appointment
Jack had his two-month appointment today, and it confirmed what we already thought – that he has really grown.
He is now 23.75 inches long (3 inches longer than at birth) and 11 pounds, 2 ounces (exactly 3 pounds more than he was at his 4-week weight check). That puts him at 80th percentile for height and 48th percentile for weight. His head also grew to 16 inches, which is in the 70th percentile. That's up from 14.25 inches and 30th percentile at his 2-week appointment. I could tell that his head has grown a lot just because his hairline from birth is really far back on his head.
He did pretty well with his visit until it came time for his shots, but that's understandable. He's been resting for most of the day since the appointment.
