Welcome home, Robert!
Robert is home for a brief stay after finishing submarine school in Connecticut and before heading out to Washington state, where his home base will be. It was also the first time he got to meet Jack, and since it could be up to two years before we see him again, we made sure to get some pictures of the entire family and of the cousins. Jack even got down on the floor to play with Dreamer. It was nice to have the entire family together.

Mara's new haircut
Mara went with Aunt Diannie, Lori, and Lani to get her hair cut today. She had the exact haircut she wanted in mind. She said she wanted it short (and would pull up her hair to show how short) with bangs. She's never really had bangs before, but I told her she could do whatever she wants since it's just hair and will grow back.
Here's her before picture:

She even got her hair washed before her haircut, which was a first for her. She wasn't too sure about it, though.
She and Lani ended up getting the same haircut. We were kind of surprised because the weekend before, Lani said she didn't want to get her hair cut – just her bangs. But, she went first and ended up with exactly what Mara wanted.

One more month...
Until Mara starts kindergarten.
Monday, July 19
I picked up a stuffed Eeyore and Tigger for Jack tonight, and he was having a lot of fun playing with them. He especially loves chewing on them.
Tuesday, July 20
Today marked the third anniversary of my mom's death, and we spent the evening at my parents' house. I'm still sad that she didn't get to meet Jack, but I know that he has been a joy to all of us.
Wednesday, July 21
Mara's class made fruit salad today, and she signed up to bring grapes. She said the salad tasted really good.
Thursday, July 22
When Jack was taking his pre-bedtime nap, we caight him in this cute pose.
Friday, July 23
Mara starts kindergarten one month from today. That means she only has three or four more weeks at her current daycare with her teachers Ms. Dorothy (pictured here) and Ms. Debbie. Since John is supposed to be off the week before she starts school, we might pull her a week early to give her a little vacation. I can't believe the time is almost here!

No title ideas for this week
Monday, July 12
We went and picked up our new (to us) minivan at John's parents' house yesterday, so today was my first day to really drive it. I think the kids like it and especially enjoyed being picked up in it. As soon as we can figure out why the VCR doesn't play, Mara will be in heaven.
Tuesday, July 13
We usually give Jack a bath, but sometimes it's easier to just shower with him – especially if we're not already giving Mara a bath. He wasn't too sure about the shower at first, but I think he's getting more used to it. He tends to make a funny little gasping sound sometimes, though.
Wednesday, July 14
Mara has started playing with her American Girl doll more recently. She got a catalog of new and existing items today, and when I asked her if she saw anything in it that she wanted, her response was, "Yeah. Everything." I'm thinking of maybe taking her to the AG store her first week of school to commemorate it. I think it would be cute to get her the cat costume or ballerina outfit.
Thursday, July 15
We like thin tortilla chips, but it's been hard to find them since Wal-Mart stopped carrying On the Border chips. We've found that Mission makes a good replacement, and they're cheaper too.
Friday, July 16
See Friday's picture here.
Saturday, July 17
We went to the store and bought Mara's backpack and lunchbox for school. Now, we just need to take her to get her supplies. Maybe next weekend. Also, Jack rolled over three times from his tummy to his back tonight. I wasn't able to catch any of them in a picture or movie, but he was in the process of rolling when I snapped the above picture.
Sunday, July 18
Mara has been working toward the goals on her chore chart, and she finally completed a set today. She decided to earn the Barbie and the Mermaid Tale DVD, which is currently her favorite movie.

Jack's 4-month Appointment
John took Jack to the doctor today for his four-month appointment. She said he looks really good, and she even commented that grabbing the toes isn't something they really expect babies to do until they are six months. He took his shots like a trooper, not crying until after they were given and even then it was just a whimper.
Here are his four-month stats:
Height/Length: 25.75 inches (80th percentile)
Weight: 14 pounds, 15 ounces (50th percentile)
Head circumference: 17 inches (75th percentile)
And here is Jack showing off the band-aids from his shots. It's hard to tell that he got them just a couple of hours earlier (and without Tylenol too).

Family time
Monday, July 5
John had to work early today, so I took Mara to the park while he and Jack took a nap. She insisted on riding her scooter there. She spent some time on the swing and then was ready to go home. I think she'll really enjoy having a swing in her own backyard when we finally get the play set all put together.
Tuesday, July 6
Jack recently discovered his toes and loves to grab them. He doesn't like socks much now and is in the process of learning how to take them off himself.
Wednesday, July 7
Mara recently started watching Avatar: The Last Airbender on Nickelodeon and really enjoys it. Since the movie just came out in theaters, McDonald's had The Last Airbender toys, so Mara got a couple of them at dinner tonight. Now we just need to take her to see the movie.
Thursday, July 8
It's been a while since I've posted a picture of our dinner. During the summer, John grills our dinner quite often. Tonight, we had sesame ginger chicken. Yum!
Friday, July 9
See Friday's post here.
Saturday, July 10
We went to JCPenney's today to find some shoes for Mara. While we were there, they offered to do a makeover for both of us. I tried a new foundation while Mara picked out a bright purple eyeshadow she had been looking at. The lady told Mara she can stop in anytime we are in Penney's to get a makeover.
Sunday, July 11
We are pretty much inheriting John's grandpa's minivan, so we had to go to John's parents' house to pick it up. It was nice to spend the day with his family. Grandma also gave Jack a little pig hat and diaper cover that she made for him.

Jack – 4 months old
Jack is now four months old and a third of the way to his first birthday. He laughs a lot now, but he seems more reserved than Mara did, saving his smiles and laughs for when he's really happy. He loves for us to sing to him – especially when he's on the changing table. Our rendition of "I Am a Stinky Boy" is one of his favorite songs and will always get a smile if not a laugh too.
He doesn't roll over quite yet, but he will roll up onto his side from his back and it doesn't take much to help him roll the rest of the way. He has even kind of rolled from his tummy to back, but not really. Jack loves to grab his toes, and he still chews on his fingers all the time. He even tries to hold his bottle a lot of the time and will pull his pacifier out of his mouth and then tries to put it back in.
He is still doing well at school. He doesn't always eat or sleep real well for other people, but that's to be expected when you're a growing boy. He goes back to the doctor next Friday, so we'll get to see exactly how big he is now.

Happy Independence Day!
Monday, June 28

Tuesday, June 29
When we went to Austin, we bought Jack an activity ball. He really likes playing with it. He'll even put his feet in it and kick his foot to make it move.
Wednesday, June 30
Mara has been sleeping with her kitty, cloths, and blanket (also known as KCB) for almost five years now. Every night and when she takes naps, she needs to have her little orange kitty, two cloths, and her satin-trimmed blanket. Sometimes she'll settle for a different animal or blanket when it's time to leave for school. It's kind of sad to see that she's growing up and not as dependent on these items anymore.
Thursday, July 1
Mara made an elephant hat at school, and she and Jack were having fun wearing it tonight.
Friday, July 2

Saturday, July 3
We finally made it to another Home Depot Kids Workshop today. Mara made a periscope, and she has been having a lot of fun with it.
Sunday, July 4
We celebrated the Fourth of July today. We went ahead and took our family picture for Jack's four-month birthday, which is Friday, but it's hard to get four people to all look at the camera at the same time especially when we're under a time crunch. We also tried to take Jack to his first fireworks show, but we were a little late. However, we were able to watch some down the Tollway.
