I haven't been sick in the previous two years, and now I get sick twice in the same year – both times when I was about 5 weeks pregnant. And again, I am spotting.
The spotting started last Thursday, but I just attributted that to bowling the day before. (Ironically, the spotting also began on the same exact day as my estimated due date for my previous pregnancy.) Then, I came down with something (cold, allergies, whatever) on Saturday, and have been coughing ever since. So, I figured the spotting was related to that until it became a little heavier today. I'm not really cramping or anything, but my stomach muscles ache after couching for three straight days. I finally decided the spotting warranted a call to the doctor, so I'm now going to see her today instead of waiting until Friday for my 6-week appointment.
My pregnancy with Mara was normal, and everything went well – no morning sickness, no issues, and I didn't even really feel pregnant until I was about 36 weeks along. Now, for the second time this year, I'm having to deal with spotting. Everything else about this pregnancy was like the one with Mara until the spotting, and I just want it to go back to being that way.
I was wanting to wait until after my appointment Friday to start telling everyone about this pregnancy because I'm so gun-shy after last time, and now I'm worried I won't have good news to share. I guess I'll just have to wait and see at my appointment this afternoon. Maybe the spotting is only related to the factors I mentioned above and everything is really OK with this baby. I can always hope.

Mara's Day
We got some of our stuff done this week (not nearly as much as I had hoped, though), but we decided that Wednesday was a day for Mara. She went a whole week of pooping in the potty, so we kept her out of school and took her to a pumpkin patch and bowling.
We went to the Flower Mound Pumpkin Patch and wandered around there for a little bit. While there, Mara picked out some pumpkins for ourselves and for John's sister, Kendra. She also got to pet a horse, wander around a hay bale maze, and play on some of the wooden vehicles they had. (You can tell that Mara's upper lip is still swollen in some of these pictures,)

For lunch, we joined Kendra and her son, Josh, who is only six months or so older than Mara, and then all five of us went bowling at Main Event. We got the lane for an hour, and we didn't even get to finish one game since it would take so long for Mara and Josh's turns. Mara started to get bored partway through the game because she couldn't use the little "ramp" to roll her ball down the lane. (The guy told us it was only for handicapped people.) So, Mara not only got to bowl by pushing the ball down the lane with her hands, she also bowled by pushing the ball with her feet and her bottom. I threatened to use her head and couple of times (and she was all for it), but I didn't want to hurt her mouth again. :)

Kendra had to go pick up Hannah from from school, so Josh stayed with us at Main Event to play a few games. They really liked the horse race game even though we didn't spend a dime on it. :)

By the time we were done, it was starting to drizzle a little bit, so Mara shared her Thomas umbrella with Josh.

Both Mara and Josh had a good time playing together, and Mara even got to play with Hannah some as well. I'm glad that Kendra and her kids were able to join us for the day.

Remembering
Today was supposed to be my estimated due date with my pregnancy earlier this year.
John and I took this week off. I knew I wouldn't be able to get much done at work – especially today. Instead, we have been using the time to get some things done around the house and tend to Mara. I'm hoping that this week will help me heal a little bit more. I know that everything has worked out for the best, but I still can't help but wonder what might have been.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm battling a slight case of depression, but then I look at my wonderful family and wonder how that can be. I do know that I get down, though, and it seems to happen more frequently recently. I think it has to do with this month. All this month, I couldn't help but think of how far along I should be. It's been harder and harder to concentrate on work recently, and I know I've been much more irritable recently.
I know that things are already looking better for us, and I hope that we will have some great news to share with everyone in the near future.

First Visit to the Dentist
We received a call this morning from Mara's pediatrician's nurse. She was checking up on Mara since they had a note that we called the nurse line this past weekend. During the conversation, she recommended that we go ahead and take Mara in to the dentist, which we were contemplating already.
I had planned to take Mara to the dentist in the near future, so I had already located a pediatric dentist near us that was on my insurance. When I called them, they fit us in this afternoon. They also gave me a piece of advice – don't go to the ER for mouth injuries in the future. This dentist will actually meet you at the office for after-hour emergencies. John and I wondered if any dentists did that, and now we know. :)
So, when we got to the dentist's office, they took a couple of x-rays of the teeth she hit. Mara wasn't too sure about the thing they had to put in her mouth to take the pictures. Besides, it hurt her to bite down on the plastic with her front teeth.

Then, the dentist took a quick look at her teeth. Mara didn't want to sit and lay back in the chair, so John held her while the dentist checked her out.

She said that things looked as good as they could considering what happened and that the purplish-blue color of her gums is normal based on the injury. She did say the teeth were a little loose, but we're in the "wait and see" stage to see how her mouth heals. She said they might have felt firm to whoever saw her in the ER, but they weren't as tight as they should be. There is the possibility that she might need at least one tooth pulled, but we'll have to wait and see.
Overall, the visit went really well, and we liked the dentist. She took the time to talk to us and let us ask whatever questions we had. Mara goes back to the dentist for a checkup and possible cleaning (depending on how her mouth heals) on Thursday, November 6.

First Trip to the ER
John and I took this next week off to do some things around the house, and so far things are not going as planned. Instead, we got to make our first trip to the emergency room with Mara last night.
We bought Mara a new nightgown yesterday, but she was having a hard time getting it on thanks to the flowy material that made it all princess-y. As she was trying to get off the couch to have John help her put her nightgown on, she fell face first into the coffee table. By the loud thud she made, we thought she hit her head until blood started pouring out of her mouth.
It took us a while to figure out what was going on – that she had gouged her gum above one of her top teeth. I'm not one to typically run to the doctor/hospital for every single thing, so I had John call his sister, Kendra, as soon as we spotted the source of the blood. We then called the nurse line and waited for the nurse to call back.
We finally heard back from the nurse at 10:15 pm – a little more than an hour after she fell and hurt herself. The nurse thought it would be best to go ahead and take her to the ER since she could have also sustained a neck injury based on how she fell. We were already prepared to head there since her mouth still hadn't stopped bleeding. We were also a little concern about how hard she tried to go to sleep about 30 minutes after she hurt herself. There was also concern that at least one of her teeth might have been knocked loose. We tried to look ourselves, but she wouldn't let either one of us do much with her mouth. The most we could tell was that she cut her gums since we could see her tooth above her gum line. We told her that if we took her to the hospital she would have to let the doctor look in her mouth, and she was OK with that.
We made it to Plano Presby a little before 11 pm and checked in. It took a little bit to get her in for the initial evaluation, but then they said she would get a room shortly. That shortly ended up being almost 30-45 minutes later because a car accident victim came in and bumped Mara. Around midnight, Mara finally fell asleep in my arms while waiting to get her room. Since she was asleep, they just had us lay her in the bed to wait.

(Yes, I took pictures. :) Mainly because I thought Mara might be disappointed in not actually getting to see the ER room after all the waiting she did – and so patiently too.)
A physician's assistant came in and took a look at her. Apparently beside the gash in her gum, she also tore her frenulum (the little flap of skin that attaches the gum to the inside of the lip). I bet you are trying to feel that with your tongue right now, aren't you? :) Luckily, she didn't knock any of her teeth loose in the fall.
There wasn't anything the PA could do about the injuries since they were inside the mouth, and the PA was afraid of trapping bacteria and making it worse by stitching it. Instead, we were sent home with a prescription for ibuprofen and an antibiotic. Mara also has to be on a soft diet for the next week because we don't want anything to reinjure her mouth.
She seems to be doing well now. She has a huge fat lip, but she's doing OK.

(Poor girl is trying to smile in the second picture.)
However, we can definitely tell when the ibuprofen wears off as she becomes very cranky. We'll probably still take her to school tomorrow so we can get some stuff done around the house, but it will be for an abbreviated day.
On a side note, John and I got to watch the first 15-20 minutes of Bee Movie. It looked really cute, and I think we'll eventually get it so we can watch the whole thing.

Return of the dog nose
Back with my pregnancy early this year, I mentioned that I had "dog nose."
I found out yesterday that I'm pregnant again, and the "dog nose" is back with a vengeance. I can smell things on the other side of the room, and I can easily tell what everyone in my end of the building is eating for lunch. At least I don't have nausea (yet – knock on wood).

Countown to June 2009
I found out today that I am pregnant again. I'm going to try not to, but it's going to be hard not to worry this time around considering what happened last time. I'll be happy to make it into the near year since that means I'm past the 15-week mark (where my previous pregnancy ended).
I told John about the pregnancy by taking pictures of the pregnancy tests and then telling him to look through the pictures on the camera (not an uncommon request from me). He's excited as well, but we're both cautious considering what happened last time.
I think finding this out the week before I was originally due has helped me cope with the loss of my previous pregnancy better.

Even More Mara-isms
I thought it was time I posted a few more Mara-isms.
To Mara, freckles are "sparkles."
The other night, we we asked her why we bought her a toy, and she replied, "Because I'm me."
We went to OKC to visit Clinton & Evelyn last weekend, and she got to play with their 8-month-old son, Gavin, along with their older son and daughter. At one point, Mara came up to me and said, "I want a baby." I told her that we would hopefully have a baby in our house one day. She then asked if we could take Gavin home with us. I laughed and told her she would have to ask Evelyn, so she did. :)
Apparently Mara has a pretend friend named Liliana. Not sure where she's ever heard that name before, but when we asked her who she is playing with, she responds, "Liliana."

Go Pokes!
I don't usually post about OSU football on our blog, but I felt like I had to post this once since the Cowboys trounced my nephew's school (Texas A&M) yesterday. Sorry your Aggies lost, Robert. Well, actually I'm not. :) Better luck next game!
