For Labor Day weekend, we went on a trip with my family up to Joplin, Missouri, and had a Harrel family reunion. It was the first time a lot of us had been up that way (the last time we went was for my grandma's funeral in January 2004). In fact, Mara and Lani had never made this trip before.
We took a lot of pictures over the weekend, so I decided to break our trip up into three different posts.
Friday, September 4
We packed up the car and left with my dad, Diane, and Lani to go to Tulsa. We wanted to go ahead and get some driving out of the way. Plus, we wanted to go to the Tulsa Zoo the next day. Mara and Lani passed the time by watching TV or playing on their DSes.
Saturday, September 5
After breakfast, we loaded up the car again and visited the Tulsa Zoo. The girls both loved seeing all of the animals and riding the camel, carousel, and train. One of the reasons I wanted to visit the Tulsa Zoo was so that Mara could see a polar bear. It wasn't until after we got there, though, that we found out the polar bear they had died back in May, and they aren't sure if they're going to get another one since they are so hard to come by in captivity. :( We did get to see a lot of baby animals, though, including two baby chimps and a couple of lion cubs.
On our way out of Tulsa, we discovered they now have a Hard Rock Cafe (and casino) on the northeast side of the city. It's really strange to think of a HRC being in Tulsa. :)
We met up with Mike & Myra (and Lori and Mikey) at the McDonald's in Vinita, Oklahoma. The Glass House McDonald's is actually the largest one in the world.
After we checked into our hotel in Joplin, we took the short drive to Pittsburg, Kansas, so we could eat at Chicken Annie's. It's always been a favorite of our family, and we always try to make it there when we are up that way. Mikey, Lani, and Mara had a lot of fun playing with a pirate eye patch they got from one of the games there.
